CBSE Improvement Exam 2026: Rules, Eligibility & Complete Process Explained

Comprehensive guide covering re-evaluation rules, improvement exam process, and impact on JEE, NEET & CUET UG admissions.

Overview

“A student who is not satisfied with his board performance but has not applied for any rechecking or re-evaluation will also not appear for the improvement exam in the same year. Can he apply for a few or all subjects consecutively next year?”

Answer: Yes.If the student has successfully passed Class 12 in any year but is unsatisfied with their marks, they are eligible to appear for the Improvement of Performance exam in the next year as a Private Candidate.

Key Rules and Conditions for Improvement Exam

  • No Retrospective Penalties: Not applying in the same year does not reduce eligibility for next year.
  • One or All Subjects: Students can choose one, multiple, or all subjects.
  • Syllabus: Exam will follow latest CBSE curriculum.
  • Theory Only: Only theory exams are required; practical marks are carried forward.
  • Mark Sheet: CBSE issues a new Statement of Marks for improved subjects only.
If marks decrease or student is absent, original marks remain valid.

Alternative Option: Rechecking & Re-evaluation

Students unsatisfied with marks can use CBSE’s 3-step verification system:

  1. Verification of Marks (Re-totalling)
  2. Obtaining Photocopy of Answer Sheet
  3. Re-evaluation of Answers
Final re-evaluated marks are binding—even if lower than original marks. Old marks cannot be restored.

Even after re-evaluation, if marks do not improve, eligibility for the next-year improvement exam remains unchanged.

Phase 1: Step-by-Step Application Process

The application process starts between September–November on the official CBSE portal.

  1. Visit official CBSE website during notification period
  2. Open Pariksha Sangam / E-Pariksha portal
  3. Select “Improvement of Performance” category
  4. Enter roll number, school code, center code
  5. Select subjects for improvement
  6. Upload photo and signature
  7. Pay fees via online mode

Phase 2: Eligibility & Technical Criteria

1. Mandatory Passing Status

  • Student must have “PASS” status in previous year
  • Compartment/Failed students are not eligible under improvement

2. Theory vs Practical

  • Only theory exams are required
  • Practical/internal marks are carried forward

3. Fees & Subjects

  • ₹300 per subject approx
  • Late fee may be ₹2000
  • One or more subjects allowed

Phase 3: Restrictions on Attempts

1. One-Year Window Rule

A passed student can appear only in the succeeding year improvement exam. Missing it means losing the chance permanently.

2. No Continuous Attempts

Students cannot give improvement exams repeatedly every year.

Exception: Only one structured cycle is allowed if supplementary + next main exam conditions are met.

Phase 4: Final Mark Sheet System

  • Separate Statement of Marks is issued
  • Best of two marks rule applies
  • Original marks remain valid if improvement is lower
Students must present both mark sheets for admissions.

What “Collating Both Mark Sheets” Means

Students receive two documents: original marksheet and improvement marksheet. Colleges combine the best subject-wise scores.

  • Physics → Original marksheet
  • Maths → Higher score from either sheet
  • Chemistry → Higher score from either sheet
This helps students achieve required percentages like 75% for engineering admissions.

Impact on National Entrance Exams

Exam 2 Mark Sheets Allowed Rule
JEE Main YES 75% eligibility based on best marks
JEE Advanced YES Top percentile requirement applies
NEET YES PCB aggregate considered
CUET YES Basic eligibility accepted
BITSAT NO Requires single full marksheet

Summary Strategy for Students

  • If targeting NITs/NEET/CUET → improve selective subjects
  • If targeting IIT/BITS → improve all subjects
