An easy-to-understand guide for both the flagship exams of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for students and parents!
INTRODUCTION
Ever dream of making a career in the dynamic fields of engineering, agriculture or pharmacy? Well, if you’re a student residing in Andhra Pradesh or Telangana or for that matter you are a parent wishing for your child’s bright academic path, then in all probability you must have heard the name of Engineering, Agriculture, and Medical Common Entrance Test (EAMCET) or Engineering, Agriculture & Pharmacy Common Entrance Test (EAPCET) or specifically AP EAPCET and TG EAPCET!
What are they, What’s the difference between AP EAPCET and TG EAPCET, or is there any difference at all? Well, both of these exams provide a gateway to a wide range of professional courses in many career fields, offered by various universities and private colleges in their respective states. Let’s decode them!
EAMCET or EAPCET – What is it?
In the undivided Andhra Pradesh, a unified entrance test was conducted for admission into engineering, agricultural, and medical streams, known as the EAMCET (Engineering, Agricultural and Medical Common Entrance Test).
Before the introduction of EAMCET, individual colleges and universities often conducted their own entrance examinations, which included multiple application fees, varying exam schedules, and considerable stress for students who had to appear for numerous tests.
Hence, in 1986, the Andhra Pradesh Government launched the Engineering Medical Common Entrance Test (EMCET) for providing admission to students in engineering and medical institutions. Later, admission to Agriculture courses was also included, and the exam came to be known as the Engineering, Agriculture, and Medical Common Entrance Test (EAMCET).
After the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014 into the separate states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana State, the EAMCET exam was split into two state-level exams:
- AP EAMCET
- TS EAMCET
As you know, NEET (UG) was introduced in 2013 and became the mandatory entrance exam for admission to medical institutions across India. Therefore, in 2021, the Andhra Pradesh Government decided to remove the letter M in EAMCET, which stands for medicine, and instead added P, which stands for ‘Pharmacy’. Thereafter, in Andhra Pradesh, the name of the exam became AP EAPCET in 2021. The Telangana Government also decided to change the name of the exam from EAMCET to EAPCET from 2024 onwards.
In addition, the Telangana Government, in 2024, also decided to use the abbreviation TG instead of TS for Telangana. Hence, the name for both the exams currently stands as
- AP EAPCET
- TG EAPCET
